What is a copay assistance program?

Drug manufacturers like Sanofi sometimes offer copay assistance programs, which include copay cards and traditional coupons, with the goal being to help cover the amount you are responsible for paying following your treatment or when you fill your prescription.

Traditionally, the amount that is provided by a manufacturer’s copay assistance reduces the out-of-pocket costs for your prescriptions and is counted toward your insurance plan’s annual deductible and out-of-pocket maximum

What is a copay adjustment program?

Some health insurance companies use copay adjustment programs, often known as accumulators and maximizers, to exclude manufacturer copay assistance from counting toward annual deductibles, out-of-pocket costs, and/or out-of-pocket maximums.

Copay adjustment programs can result in changes to your out-of-pocket expenses. That’s why it’s important to learn more about these programs and understand what you can do if you are currently enrolled in one.

How do I know if my insurance plan has a copay adjustment program?

Copay adjustment programs are most commonly used in employer-based, high-deductible health plans (HDHPs) and patients are often unaware that they are enrolled. These programs may have names like Accumulator Adjustment Program, Variable Copay Program, Coupon Adjustment, Benefit Plan Protection Program, or Out-of-Pocket Protection Program. These names may change, and new programs can be introduced by a plan at any time. Steps you can take to better understand your insurance coverage include:

  • Review your plan details
  • Contact your insurance provider
  • Talk to your employer
