Preparing for Home Infusion

Getting your space ready

For some patients, getting infusions for a lysosomal storage disorder (LSD) at home may be an option. While it may feel like a big change, and a little overwhelming, know that you have support to help you through it. Your CareConnect team can help you connect with a home health agency and share tips to help you prepare for this change.

Home infusions may come with new responsibilities. This includes receiving, storing, and possibly ordering the medication and supplies for your infusion. Making sure you’re prepared is an important first step. Here are some tips to help you get ready for your home infusion.

Receive and store

Before your first home infusion occurs, you will be mailed a large box of medical supplies and a smaller box with the medication for your infusion. Be sure to empty all contents of each box as soon as they arrive so that nothing gets missed or thrown out.

Refrigerate as directed

The medication is made of the enzyme you need and must be refrigerated immediately upon its arrival. You should plan to be home to receive it, arrange for it to be shipped to an alternate location (such as a neighbor’s home), or schedule it to arrive at a different time.

Prep the workspace

The box of medical supplies may also include special storage instructions. Be sure to have space in your fridge, or a separate mini fridge, to store your medication and any necessary medical supplies. Before the nurse comes to your home, you should also clear a workspace, such as a table or countertop, for the nurse to prepare your medication.

Keep in mind: Because your dose is based on your weight, you may need to have a scale available for periodic weight checks per your healthcare provider’s orders or home health agency policies. Your dose may change periodically if there are significant changes in your weight.

One final note: It’s about you.

At CareConnect, we understand that it may be stressful to have a home health nurse come to your home. We sometimes hear from patients that they are cleaning or reorganizing their home in advance of a visit.

Trust us when we say your home health nurse will NOT judge or critique your home, how it is decorated, or how clean it is. They are experienced, caring, and diligent professionals who want to deliver the care you need in the best way they can.

Over time, it’s likely you’ll develop a comfortable relationship with your home health nurse and rely on them as part of your trusted care team.
