LSDs explained in plain language

Lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) are complex conditions that involve cellular processes beyond the human eye. If it helps you or your family understand what’s happening at a cellular level, think of having an LSD as driving a car with a malfunctioning windshield wiper.

In this case, the wiper is an enzyme that is not clearing substances like lipids or sugar quickly enough from cells in the body.

As substances build up, certain organs are no longer able to function as they’re supposed to, much like a windshield clogged with snow or rain will fail to provide a view of the road.

This buildup can potentially lead to life-threatening symptoms just as an obscured windshield can potentially lead to more serious problems on the road.

If you’d like to get familiar with some of the scientific terms used with LSDs, see our article, “Lingo to Learn About LSDs”.
