Treatment and Travel

Tips to help plan your trip

Living with a chronic condition often requires a structured schedule or routine. This does not need to prevent you from going on a trip for work or pleasure. While traveling may require you to adjust your typical routine, there are ways that you can prepare to ensure you do not miss a treatment and still enjoy your time away.

In this article, you will find tips to help you prepare before your trip and while you're on the go, so you may stay consistent with your treatment during your travels.

Tell your doctor as soon as possible of your travel plans.
Your healthcare team can help you write an action plan in case of emergency and help you find medical facilities and pharmacies near your destination. If traveling to another time zone, ask your doctor if the timing of your treatment should be adjusted.

Coordinate your coverage with your Case Manager and insurance company.
Work with your CareConnect Case Manager to contact your insurance company and determine if your health insurance covers services at your destination or if you need to identify alternative means of covering the cost of services.

Prepare your treatment plan well in advance of your trip.
If receiving infusions while traveling, double-check the date(s) and location(s). If traveling with medication, ensure that you have enough even if there are travel delays.

Let your support circle know before you go.

Share your travel plans and your contact information with your CareConnect team and close family or friends who are familiar with your condition and treatment in case of emergency. See our article, “Traveling with a Chronic Condition” for related tips.

If traveling with medication or supplies, check the storage requirements as some medications require temperature-controlled storage.

Notify the hotel and transportation company (airline, cruise line, or train line) if you need accommodations. Do not pack your medication in a checked bag in case of temperature variations, rough handling, or lost luggage.

If flying to your destination with prescription medication, review airline and TSA policies.
Make sure to bring any documentation they may require, such as a travel letter from your doctor with a brief description of your condition and the need for the medication. Check with the airline or TSA beforehand to ensure compliance with their policies.

Always reach out to your doctor with any specific questions regarding your treatment. Your Case Manager is a great resource for questions about care coordination or coverage, but keep in mind that your healthcare team is the best source of information for questions or concerns about your health.
